Interim Class Notes
November 8, 2023
1) Williams held a Mini-Reunion on the weekend of October 20-22, during which the Class of ’73 participated in its second Pass-the-Baton dinner. A year ago Steve Hartyspoke humorously as our class received the Baton from the class of 1972 in a ceremony that began in 1967 when the Class of 1917 held its 50th Reunion and created the event. Each year thereafter the outgoing 50th Reunion class has presented the baton to the incoming 50th Reunion class. This year Steve Hauge and Scott Hopkins offered words of counsel to the incoming class (1974), supported by Ned and Judy Carmody, Linda Vipond Heath and Robert Heath, Field Horne, Peter and Mary Pierson, and Dick Tavelli.
2) We are arranging a series of “Class Conversations” during which a member of the class will interview another member (or members) of the class on a topic of general interest. We’ll host this three times a year – in November, February, and May, or roughly in the middle of an academic year’s trimesters. Each session will run about 45 minutes, with the front half being the “interview” and the back half being Q&A. We’ll participate via ZOOM, starting at 8 pm Eastern, 7 pm Central, 6 pm Mountain and 5 pm Pacific. Anyone interested in interviewing or being interviewed, please contact Steve Hauge (Hauge4@aol.com). Check the Class Calendar for the topic and day.
The first Conversation will be Steve Hauge interviewing Scott Hibbard on “Writing Historical Fiction” on Thursday, November 30. Steve is the author of two Dark Against the Sky books about climbing boys (or young chimney sweeps) in London in 1834, while Scott is the author of Beyond the Rio Gila, a Virginia boy’s journey across this country in 1846. A ZOOM invitation will be sent in advance.
3) The next Williams People article will appear in January, so please provide any submission by December 10. Please send it to Hauge4@aol.com and ensure that you title it ClassNotes73 so it does not get lost. The College has suggested possible topics: How have you changed Williams? How has Williams changed you? I would also offer one from a splendid article by David Brooks called “Give the Gift of Your Attention” (The New York Times, 10/22/23): If the next five years is a chapter in your life, what is the chapter about?
4) We have a new class website address. Instead of the longer williamscollege73.com, we are now simply williams73.org (or more simply williams73 in your search function). It’s easier and quicker for you to get to the website for class news.
Please note the top two boxes on the website: Class Calendar and Latest Class Notes. The former will provide a rolling three-month list of class events, and the latter will provide interim information between issues of Williams People. Check them at the start of each month to start current.
Notice the superb work that Peter Pierson has done to organize the blocks of information for you across the website.
