Best time of year to visit: anytime June-August (summertime Maine) or September-October (fall in New England)

Stay location suggestions: the Inn on Park Row (165 Maine St)

Access (Fly into…Driving time from airport): Portland is 45 minutes south

Things to see/do: Bowdoin College, including museum of art and arctic museum; Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, Maine State Music Theater, springboard for visiting Downeast, MidCoast, central mountains, and Portland (cultural and culinary hub).

Where to stay:

  • Upscale Hotels - Keswick Hall; The Boar’s Head (owned by UVA), the Omni near the downtown mall

  • Many moderately priced motels

Fly directly into Charlottesville, but usually requires a stop elsewhere; Diving - 2 hours from Dulles; about 85 minutes from Richmond Int’l Airport.

Activity highlights - Monticello (make reservations); Ashlawn (home of James Monroe); Montpelier (home of James Madison); The University of Virginia, including the Rotunda and the Academical Village designed by Thomas Jefferson; the downtown mall - a walking mall with restaurants and stores; several wineries including the King Family Winery in Crozet; the Ragged Mountain Natural Area; the Blue Ridge Mountains about 20 miles west of Charlottesville - scenic views from the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway and plenty of hiking opportunities; two semi-public golf courses - the Birdwood course of UVA and Old Trail in Crozet.
